Quite to the Contrary
By Don Iannone
Slugs...
...not lazy people who move slowly
...in the grocery store line
...but insects
...hanging out in your garden
...sucking life from your flowers.
Butterflies...
...not the supple delicate creatures
...fluttering in your garden
...but the two-legged social ones
...flittering about at cocktail parties
...spilling drinks on your rug.
Skeeters...
...not the blood-sucking creatures
...leaving welts on your arm
...but blood-sucking people
...sapping away
...your life energy and wealth.
Life...
...sometimes what we think
...and sometimes not.

Life is what happens when you are busy making plans
Hey Kathleen and Ari4u...
Yeah, different energy than the more joyous poetry I write.
In an overall sense, this poem attempts to point to how the same word means different things. When I wrote it, I was feeling a bit playful.
This poem attempts to convey a "feel" of perplexion, and and a "thought-image" of contrast. Did I accomplish that is the question.
Look for something joyous shortly...either here at Conscious Living or even elsewhere in your beautiful lives.
Blessings.
I hate "butterflies" that drink!! good one!!
Good point Pat. Thanks.
Neat dual-use of words. I would have liked to have seen one more stanza after skeeters with another dual-use insect. I'm not sure why, but four seems more stable in this particular poem. Of course, not having given it any thought, maybe there aren't anymore. :) Neat experiment, Don!
Mike...interesting idea. Thanks. I'll think on it. How about a "CAT?" LOL
great indeed
Usually sometimes not but lets not give up on Humanity(and on ourselves), for we belong together and sometimes we ourselves are the "sometimes not' (at least myself)!
Thanks Kai.
Thanks Plus Ultra. No giving up here.
