Longing to Let Go
By Don Iannone

Some days your soul seems to wander,
in search of tattered memories and faded dreams.
Some days you long to retrieve your roots,
however twisted and convoluted they may be.
Some days you want your youth back,
the eager spring in your step,
and long days of just blissful play,
filled with honest imagination.
Some days you wish you could go back
and cut the painful ties holding you still
to things buried deep in the past.
Some days you long to be free
of all the addictions, compulsions, obsessions,
and even the dreams

that keep you from being truly free.
Some day you will care less

about all these things,
and surrender to the stars in the sky,
the carefree birds that sing in glee,
and the warm lapping waves

calling you gently from the beach.

Hi Don, Thank you for your visit once again, and your thoughtful comment.

Once again, the wisdom in your poetry shines through. I can't help but think of the so many ways we are rooted to the past, the book of our lives having been filled with pages written by every significant person and every experience.

Some days it would be nice to simply edit that book and even rip out a few of the pages, but then again the book is the culmination of all that has brought us each to who we are today...reaching, growing, learning, sharing ... just being.

Blessings, hugs, and love to you this evening. :)

Don..you write such beautiful poetry. It flows like a river. I like these last lines." Some day you will care less
about all these things,
and surrender to the stars in the sky,
the carefree birds that sing in glee,
and the gentle lapping waves
calling you gently from the beach." So true.

Don it really is beautiful. We do have some days filled with nostalgia, though some memories could be painful we do tend to and need to visit them once in a while. I found your closing brilliant

an epic feel. yes, how we wish to correct every step, right or worng, for the peace of mind. There are many want's in the human soul, none would be worst that the feeling of not having finished something.

Thanks Starry Night, Serenity, Yandisdara, Ghost Particle, and Dumbdodi. Glad you all found something in the poem. Surrender is important for me as well and so if moving from the past to the present and abiding there. Blessings to each of you. Just remember the first step is giving things our intention and then reminding ourselves of what we intend.

This poem touched a chord. Oh the things that hold us back and rob us from just being free, but it's knowing this that allows us to soar in between those moments.

I'm with you all the way.
If you are still playing tennis you still got a spring in your step.
But if more could grasp the above, and the rest of the verses, they'd feel lighter in body & soul, be younger in body & soul, even live longer in body & soul.

Wishing you a pleasant evening! - Q

I have missed reading blogs in any depth, Don yours is certainly one of the best, this is a great piece of writing, I feel it, I remember feeling it many times. You are a really fine poet Don, giving real touches of life.

Don Iannone, D.Div., Ph.D. said...

Jim...thank you. Your words are too kind. Remember it is the reader who creates the poem in his or her mind. All I did was place was words on paper (virtual paper that is) and you did the rest.

Yes, freedom is letting go of the past, no matter how glorious or painful.

Imemine...thanks. Yes it is indeed. Hard to let go of each for different reasons.
