A Grandfather's Passing
By Don

Just an ordinary school day,
Like most days,
I came home for lunch,
Why was Dad home from work?
Mom and Dad sat at the kitchen table,
The house was too quiet,
Grandpap had died,
The man of few words,
who wore suspenders, smoked a pipe,
and fixed things in his workshop, was gone,
Fifty-two years before,
this strong and determined man
landed at Ellis Island alone,
His family loved him and respected his courage,
I like to think Vito Iannone
set sail for a new world
on that cold February morning in 1958.
