The Gravedigger's Silence
By Don Iannone
From my window,
I intently watch as
the gravedigger quietly
prepares the earth
for someone's return.
His work is done in
reverent silence.
What does he, or
the man he buries
need with words?
The talking stops
in the world beyond words,
The prayers are
for those who remain,
The poems for
those who still journey.
