Boys Playing by the Side of Road
By Don Iannone

Young boys playing their hearts out
before the late summer sun sets

and the stars take over the sky,
Boys filled with overwhelming eagerness
and untamed magic--

the sort only young hearts can contain,
Dirty-faced boys

lusting for adventure
in far away places
their hearts long to visit,
Boys pretending to be men

pretending to be boys,
But for now,

just young boys playing
along side a dusty country road
they pray will never end.

  5. Thanks Margie...I hope you get some sun for your cookout. Trust the universe to provide you just what you need...either rain or shine. Raining here too in Cleveland. Blessings.

Thanks Serenity...Enjoy your weekend too. This poem speaks to the child within. There is lots of symbolism in it...boys, play, roads, seasons, pretending, hopes and dreams, and more. It was triggered by a drive through very rural Pennsylvania and seeing these young country boys have the time of their life doing who knows what. But there they were by the side of the dusty road with sweaty dirt streaks on their faces making them look like young braves. Blessings.

  8. Don,
I had to pop back on over as a thought struck me. One line in particular stood out....

    "Boys filled with overwhelming eagerness
    and untamed magic--
the sort only young hearts can contain"

May we all open ourselves to the overwhelming eagerness and untamed magic of our childhood that still lives in our hearts, and share it with one another in unity, love, and light.

As always, thank you for the magic in your words.

    Blessings back to you!

  9. Serenity...thank you. And yes, these particular points you bring back to awareness are those we shared earlier this week. Always be young at heart! Blessings to you.

  11. I like the way you have conveyed the magic of an apparently mundane situation.

  12. Sometimes in a hurry to get old
    sometimes trying to catch gold
before the hot trail goes cold

Sometimes in a hurry for the City
Sometimes lusting for the night life and the bright City lights

And then wanting to slow time
    and wishing for peace sublime
Then wanting to leave the bustle
and hear the country leaves rustle

  14. I can almost see these boys in my mind's eye. I picture a sleepy southern town, the kind my parents grew up in. Melancholy but hopeful and substantial.
